Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
