Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
